On 8th March, 2026, India lifted their third T20 World Cup title and roughly four months down the line, the champion team lost a series against the underdogs who completely outplayed the title holders. Ireland, the cricketing nation which is building block by block, etched the name in the history books as they defeated the Indian Team in a series by 2-0. The result came as a shocker to the visitors as they were taking the field for the first time with the newly assigned captain - Shreyas Iyer. Moreover, the team was packed with power hitters and T20 specialists like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson etc, But despite all these factors, the odds were in the favour of the bravest- The Ireland

Match 1: India Vs Ireland, 26 June, 2026, Stormont, Belfast

A lot of spectators showed up as they wanted to witness the Sooryavanshi magic, who was about to make his debut and become the youngest player to play international cricket, but like Indian fans, Ireland fans were too disappointed as the young prodigy was omitted from the playing XI.

After winning the toss, India decided to bowl first. From Ireland it was L. Tucker and G. Delany, who helped their team, posted 182 by the end of the innings. It wasn’t a mammoth total, but the India team succumbed as they were all out in 18.5 overs. Hence, it was the star studded batting line, that failed to chase down the modest target. Notably, the bowling department had a decent performance but it was the batting department that didn’t rise to the occasion. Maybe it was the overconfidence or the casualness that led them down. Abhishek Sharma did show some resilience from one end as he scored 49 off 20 balls. But, that wasn’t enough as batters coming down the order failed completely. It was a massive blow as it’s hard to digest that a treat with so many match winners, lost to a team that barely gets game

Match 2: India vs Ireland, 28 June, 2026, Stermont, Belfast

After the first match defeat, India was looking to level the series score, but, god has different plans! The only positive in the second match was that the margin of loss was much lower. Otherwise, it was a flop show from the Indian team as they failed to chase the target, yet again! Ireland scored 154/8 in 20 overs with H. Tector scoring a fifty. In reply, India’s opening pair was in dugouts in the very first over as both the players- Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson were out on duck! Later, Tilak Varma showed some character as he scored a composed fifty, but again, that wasn’t enough for the team to steal a victory.

For a team to do well, it is the role of the captain to set an example and in both the matches, Shreyas Iyer looked pale. The captaincy baton was passed to Shreyas Iyer, but he didn’t step up as expected. Afterall, it’s not a cake walk to fill in shoes for Suryakumar Yadav. Moreover, with this series defeat, the record streak of 16 unbeaten series was also

Conclusion

Some contemplation is required from the management and the head coach Gautam Gambhir as they now will be taking the field against England in a five match series in English conditions. The team needs to restart and gain the needed momentum if they want a different result this time. Shreyas Iyer needs to take some good calls as the captain, and maybe, this time they can also handover the debut cap to young sensation- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Apart from that, it’s time to give credit to the Ireland team for displaying bold character and for playing extraordinary cricket! Before the start the series, India were the favourites, but it was their courage and determination that helped them in stealing those victories, not once, but twice
