Revival of Rohit Sharma: The 2.0 Version

Before the start of ODI series against England in July 2026, a lot of speculations were raised against the future of two veterans- Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Apart from that, the Indian Team, too was in a hollow space as they had already lost a couple of T20 series in a span of a month. Hence, this series held tremendous value as a lot of things needed to be assessed, be it individual performances, or head coach’s capabilities. But now, as the series has been winding up, and India have lost another by 2-1, a dark cloud still looms around the dressing room as their plans are failing on a recurring basis. However, the silver lining of this series has been the redemption of Rohit Sharma! For someone whose place was questioned on multiple occasions, he did a commendable job by scoring 138 off 110 balls, silencing the critics with his elegant

Performance in the Ind vs Eng ODI series 

Rohit’s performance in the first two ODIs looked quite flat as it looked like the veteran wasn’t comfortable in his own skin. His approach was changed, he looked baffled and his own methods were not working. Someone of his stature loves to attack right from the first ball. But he was taking a lot of time to settle, to counter the opponents. Acceleration from there was quite difficult for him. Because of his poor form, the speculations on his retirement were raised. But, legends are built differently. They have this ability to bounce back from their own grave, and so did he. He showed his class, stamped his authority, like he always does. He played a memorable innings at the Lord’s and also became the first Indian to score a century at the Mecca of Cricket in ODI format. Just like a true champion, he bounced back. Just when everyone thought he was finished, he made his way back and now the selectors need to rethink as the Hitman is hungrier than ever!

Rohit Sharma has been an exceptional talent and one of the best cricketers this country has ever produced. Not only is he a great batsman, but also a visionary leader too. He has shattered plenty of records and has won an ICC T20 World Cup as well. Hence, it’s not easy to find his replacement, as his numbers speak volumes of his craft. Some of his many records are:

• Only batsman to score five centuries in single edition of World Cup
• First Indian to complete 300 sixes in ODI 
• Holds record for most sixes in ODI

The 2.0 version 

Rohit is presently 39 and is still evolving as a player and it’s his fire, that is keeping him alive in the format. If we look closely, we’ll see, he has made minor changes in his technique, in his scoring areas. His template is the same, but the way he is attacking is different. For instance, now we see the ramp shot quite often. Earlier he barely used to hit there, but now, considering the requirements of the game, he has added more weapons to his game. Apart from that, his fitness has also improved, he is quicker, has lost considerable weight and is agile like ever

Being such a senior and experienced player, he realises that he needs to work extra hard if he has to silence all the critics and hence, he is putting in the extra effort, so that he can match the fitness of players 10-12 years younger to him. It takes a lot of mental and physical toughness to sustain at the highest level, and he is showing signs of tremendous belief by scoring runs and performing for the team. Even though India lost the series, it was really pleasant to see Sharma in his zone, smashing balls out of the park and playing his A game.

Way to 2027 World Cup 

One bad day in the 2023 World Cup Final deprived Rohit Sharma and the Indian Team from the home World Cup title and the heart still aches thinking of that night. To overcome that and make the country proud, Rohit Sharma is very keen on playing the 2027 World Cup and finishing on a higher note. He has given a lot to the country, but the final fortress, the 2027 title still needs to be conquered! For him to achieve that feat, he needs to stay consistent with his skill and fitness and more importantly, the Indian selectors and head coach- Gautam Gambhir need to back him, no matter what. Because only a player of his caliber can do it!
