From underdogs to champions: India’s Test Cricket Saga
Test cricket is the toughest and most enduring format of cricket. It demands a lot of hard work, both skill wise and fitness wise. One has to be technically very sound to survive here. Unlike the modern day cricket, test cricket requires a lot of perseverance and practice to become a better player. We often see elite players saying that they prefer the longer format more than the shorter formats. It is because red ball cricket is very much related to one’s life and anyone with a weak mindset cannot survive in this format. Hence, it is the test of the best.
India’s test team is highly ranked as it is one of the best sides in the world. Since the last decade or so, our national team has been doing very well. We are mostly ranked number 1 in the world and the prime reason for such dominance has been Virat Kohli’s vision as a Test captain.

India has played 584 test matches since the very beginning. Out of which, we have won 180 matches, lost 181 matches, drawn 222 matches and tied 1 match. This record is for both home and abroad matches.

In total, there are 29 test grounds in the country and India takes most benefit of having such diversity of cricket grounds through the length and breadth of the county. These grounds are sanctioned by ICC as they are ideal to hold international test matches.
What are SENA countries and how conditions different?
SENA is a short form of South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia. Conditions in SENA countries are different than in the subcontinent. While the ball spins and turns a lot in India, it doesn’t happen so abroad. On the contrary, there the ball tends to bounce more, which is unlikely in India. Due to differences in home and away conditions, it is challenging for Indian players to play outside the subcontinent. They have to be adaptive and mentally very strong to tackle conditions in different parts of the world.

Who is the India’s best Test captain?
It is a debatable topic as to who has been the best Test captain of the Indian Team so far. Some people say that MS Dhoni has been the best leader, others say it is Virat Kohli who brought revolutionary changes. But, we at ZAP cricket believe that it is King Kohli. MS was a legendary captain in white ball cricket, as he registered three ICC trophies by his name. But, in red ball cricket, it has to be Virat Kohli.
Before his tenure, nobody could think of India as a dominant side in SENA countries. But it was the vision of Kohli, who gave the Indian Team new horizons. He changed the ideology of players by largely emphasizing on fitness. He always believed that in order to become the best in the world, Indians have to develop a work ethic that makes them look dangerous on the field. That idea itself changed the dynamics of cricket in India.
Before that, people didn’t know about the Yo-yo test or Olympic powerlifting and hence Indian players were behind by a few yards. But, Kohli himself changed his regime and that ultimately changed the culture in the Indian dressing room. Apart from that, Kohli came up with a very different mindset. He made everyone believe that India could do well in SENA countries and that belief system made them win a lot of series abroad.
Another test captain, Ajinkya Rahane, was often looked at as a backup option and was highly underrated. He was an exceptional leader but his leadership qualities were rather overlooked. It was in 2021 when he filled the shoes of Virat Kohli and lifted the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, that too with an inexperienced young side.
Presently, Rohit Sharma is the captain who is doing well. His next big assignment is Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and we are hopeful that Indian will do well there, like they have done previously.
