Rise of India in T20: A powerhouse in making
T20 cricket is the shortest, quickest form of cricket. It requires explosive power throughout the game. Due to the nature of sport, this format allows minimum time to recover and bounce back. Hence, players who have the ability to react quickly usually excel in T20.
India’s T20 team is currently ranked number 1 and is infused with the young blood. It has players who understand the need of the game well and those who can adapt well to the conditions. Hence, the team excels in almost every match they play. The team has played 242 matches so far. Out of which they have won 160 and lost 70. This data alone proves India’s strength in the shortest format.
Performance in World Cups
India has lifted the ICC T20 World Cup twice, in 2007 and 2024. The first victory came under captain MS Dhoni and the second one under Rohit Sharma.
A very young and inexperienced team toured to South Africa in 2007. Nobody even thought that India could lift the trophy as T20 was a newly introduced format back then. MS and Co. played each game with utmost strength and eventually lifted the World Cup by beating Pakistan in the finals. It was a nail biting match but men in blue held their nerves till the very last ball.
In 2024, Rohit had a very experienced and polished side in the dressing room, unlike 2007. Hence, all the senior players gave their all. Before the start of the World Cup, nobody imagined that India’s World Cup drought would end in the T20 format. But as it is rightly said, God has better plans, everything aligned perfectly and ultimately it was India, whose name was carved in history books.

Most successful T20 captain of India
The data reveals that Rohit Sharma has been the most successful captain so far. He has the winning percentage of 79.00 and even has an ICC trophy by his name. His ideology of ‘going all out’ was widely appreciated by cricket experts as that allowed players to freely express themselves. He always allowed his players to play fearless cricket and that eventually worked for the betterment. Later, he signed off from the format in style by lifting the 2024 World Cup.
Now, all the responsibilities lie on the shoulders of newly appointed skipper- Suryakumar Yadav. So far his record has been impressive as he has already won a series in Sri Lanka, South Africa and India. He is preparing the side for the next World Cup and is very optimistic in grabbing the 2026 title.
